Gauteng Juniors Represent South Africa on the World Youth Stage

June 26, 2026

Gauteng Chess is proud to celebrate the South African youth players competing at the 2026 FIDE World Youth Chess Championships in Montesilvano, Italy.

This prestigious international event brings together some of the strongest junior chess players from across the world, giving our young players the opportunity to measure themselves against top opposition in their age groups.

Among the South African team are four players from Gauteng:

  • JM Tayla Van Dyk — U14 Girls
  • WRM Liezl Westermann — U14 Girls
  • JSM Museera Meeran — U18 Girls
  • JSM Dewald Coetsee — U18 Open

Representing South Africa at world level is a special achievement. It reflects not only talent, but also dedication, preparation, tournament experience and the support of families, coaches and chess communities behind each player.

As the championship reaches its final round today, Gauteng Chess sends its best wishes to the full South African youth team. The last round of a world event requires focus, resilience and courage — and we know our players will give it their all until the final move.

To Tayla, Liezl, Museera and Dewald: your Gauteng chess family is proud of you. Play with confidence, enjoy the moment, and continue to represent South Africa with pride.

We also acknowledge the parents, coaches and officials who have supported our juniors on this international journey. These opportunities are made possible through commitment, sacrifice and the shared belief that South African youth chess belongs on the world stage.

Good luck to Team South Africa in the final round — Gauteng Chess is behind you all the way.
